We need solutions for the manufacture of chemicals that are smarter, more predictable and sustainable as we move forward with the 21st century. Industrial biotechnology is changing how we makechemicals and materials, with the goal of providing us alternative energy sources. It is an attractive alternative to manufacturing technologies that can be utilized in ways which will benefit the environment and industrial sectors. The course covers enabling technologies in this area including systems and synthetic biology, biochemicals as well as process engineering. It is important that you have a solid foundation in these key areas because of the material delivered through lectures. Responsible research innovation and bioethics are some issues that will be looked at. In the second part of our course, we will see how these technologies can be used in real world applications which benefit society and impact everyday lives.
